Autumn at Lake Clark

Lake Clark is absolutely beautiful in the fall. The mixture of colors, the cool air, wildlife, and new snow is spectacular. Lake Clark Air provides floatplane and bush-wheel plane access to the Lake Clark backcountry to experience Alaska's amazing transition from summer to fall.

Our busy summer season has finally slowed down and I will try to get some updates in from our 2008 season at The Farm Lodge. We had a beautiful fall in the Lake Clark area. These pictures were taken in late September as the snow was creeping its way farther and farther down the mountains towards Turquoise Lake in Lake Clark National Park.

Lake Clark National Park is a photographers dream location. The area contains 3 mountain ranges, two active volcanos, glaciers, numerous lakes and a very healthy fish and game population. Bear viewing, photography, hiking and fishing are just some of the reasons to visit this area. There is a small community at Port Alsworth and a ranger station. If you're looking for adventure off the beaten path Lake Clark National Park and Preserve is the trip for you.

Salmon and Seals

This last week I had an 85-year-old gentleman and his two sons visit our lodge for some Salmon fishing. Each day we would fly the floatplane to a remote river, set up the camp chairs, pour the coffee, and enjoy some outstanding fishing for Sockeye Salmon. We even got to land the plane in Lake Iliamna one day on the way to the fishing hole and film the freshwater seals.

Bears at Brooks Camp

I took a flightseeing group to Brooks Camp yesterday where we watched what seemed like 50 or more bears feeding on salmon at the falls. It's amazing to watch the bears as they competed for the best fishing spot then position themselves to catch a salmon in midair as it makes its way up stream. The National Park Service is always near by to remind visitors they are in "bear country" and bears have the right of way. We were fortunate to see a sow with 4 spring cubs, a truly unique sight.

Today was a special day at Lake Clark Air. I dropped a young couple off at a remote lake. The young lady did not know that her boyfriend had buried a ring there the year before and was going to propose to her. When I returned to pick them up in the afternoon, they were both beaming. She of course had said yes.

Lake Clark: Big Bears, Big Fish

Yesterday was another beautiful day in Lake Clark National Park. On our way into a remote lake we spotted two big Grizzly Bears cooling off on a snow patch. The fishing was amazing, we caught and released over 30 Northern Pike, 8 of them over 15 pounds. At dinner a moose swam across the bay right in front of The Farm Lodge, providing a perfect ending to a perfect day.

Flight paths in the state of Alaska are like road maps to the rest of "the lower 48" because in this huge state so many areas are accessible only by air. Lake Clark National Park is one of those areas and during the flight from Anchorage to Port Alsworth you will be treated to majestic scenery that will take your breath away. Among other trips Lake Clark Air offers fly-out fishing trips, fly-out bear viewing or guided flightseeing of the Mulchatna Caribou herd. Imagine seeing thousands of caribou roaming the Alaska wilderness, it's an amazing sight.

The Farm Lodge

In southwest Alaska near the headquarters of Lake Clark National Park in Port Alsworth is The Farm Lodge. This remote Alaskan lodge has surprisingly modern accommodations with heat and running water. The three home-cooked Alaskan meals a day are served in the main lodge and include dishes made from fresh vegetables picked right from the garden, fresh baked breads and homemade deserts.

You can take a bear or caribou viewing flightseeing trip, do a photography workshop, catch-and-release fishing or spend all day sitting by the lake enjoying the view.
